THE NEW EMPEROR [a moral story]

The emperor of an empire in the Far North was growing old. Knowing he will soon die, he decided that it was time to choose his successor.. Instead of choosing one of his assistants or his children, he decided something different. This is because all of his children were wayward. He wanted a good and responsible successor. So, one day, he called the young people in the kingdom together. He said, "It is high time for me to step down from the throne and choose the next emperor. I have decided to choose one of you." The people were shocked! (knowing the emperor has sons who could be selected) But the emperor continued. "I am going to give each and every one of you a seed today. One very special seed of its own kind, though common in this empire. I want you to plant the seed, water and nurture it and come back here after one year from today with what you have grown from this one seed. I will then judge the plants that you bring, and the person whose plant I choose will be the next emperor!"
Everyone present was given a seed including a boy whose name was George. George went home hurriely and excitedly told his mother the story. She immediately helped him get a pot and very fertile planting soil, and he planted the seed carefully and watered it on interval basis. Every day he kept watering it and watching to see if it had grown. After about three weeks, some of the other youths began to talk about their seeds and the plants that were beginning to grow. George kept checking and watering his seed, but it didn't grow. Three weeks, four weeks, five weeks went by, Still nothing to show forth. By now, the others were talking about their plants but George didn't have a plant, and he felt like he was a failure. Six months went by, still nothing grew in George's pot. He just knew he had killed his seed. Everyone else had trees and tall plants, but he had nothing. George didn't tell his friends anything about his seed, however. He just kept waiting for his seed to grow. One year finally went by and all the youths of the kingdom brought their plants to the emperor for inspection. George told his mother that he was not going to take an empty pot to the emperor. George's mother told him that he had to go. But being honest about what happened, George felt sick inside of him, but he knew his mother was right. He finally decided to go and so he took his empty pot to the palace. When George got there, he was amazed at the variety of plants grown by the other youths. They were so beautiful in all shapes and sizes. George, almost feeling like crying, put his empty pot on the floor and many of the people present laughed at him. Few of them felt sorry for him and just said, "At least you still tried your best" When the emperor arrived, he surveyed the large palace room and greeted the young people. George just tried as much as he could to hide at the back. "What great plants, trees and flowers you have grown," said the emperor. "Today, one of you will be appointed the next emperor!" All those with tall plants were beinging to feel curious and happy. All of a sudden, the emperor spotted George at the back of the room with his empty pot. He immediately ordered the palace guards to bring him to the front. George was so frightened and terrified. "The emperor knows I'm a failure! Maybe he will have me killed!" George said within himself. When George got to the front, the Emperor asked his name. "My name is George," he said. All the people were laughing and making fun of him. Then the emperor ordered everyone be quiet. He looked at George, and then announced to the crowd, "Behold your new emperor! His name is George!" George couldn't believe it. He couldn't even grow his seed. How could he possibly be the new emperor? Then the emperor said, "One year ago, I gave everyone here a seed each. I told you to take the seed, plant it, water it, and bring it back to me today. But I gave you all boiled seeds, which would not grow. All of you, except George, have brought me trees and plants and flowers. When you found that the seed would not grow, you substituted another seed for the one I gave you. George was the only one with the courage and honesty to bring me a pot with my seed in it. Therefore, he is the one who will be the new emperor!"
